Dowdell’s Knob, above King’s Gap, is where President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself often picnicked and pondered world affairs while visiting Harris County. A life-size sculpture of the president now welcomes visitors to the overlook, a reminder of the significance of the vista before them. Hikers and backpackers are rewarded for their hard work with priceless views from Dowdell’s Knob, the highest point in Harris County.

A local landmark, Dowdell’s Knob once served as an open-air church and sanctuary to Harris County residents. Discovered by President Roosevelt on one of his many driving expeditions through the area, this spot quickly became one of his favorite locations to dine, relax and take in the splendor of nature.

TIPS FROM LOCALS:

Enjoy a beautiful sunset here, like President Roosevelt once did.
